Dr Lutie Van Den Berg

Dr Lutie Van den Berg (Principal)


Dr Lutie Van Den Berg graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits Medical School) in 1987 and has lived in Mackay with his family since June 2000. His qualifications include Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.

He has practiced Skin Cancer Medicine in Mackay since 2004 and has completed the University of Queensland Certificate in Primary Skin Cancer Surgery, Certificate in Advanced Skin Cancer Surgery, Certificate in Primary Skin Cancer Medicine. He also has passed the Advanced Dermoscopy Examination of the Skin Cancer College of Australia & New Zealand and has memberships of the Skin Cancer College of Australia and New Zealand as well as the Skin Cancer Institute.

Dr Van Den Berg is the founder and principal of the Smart Scan Mackay Melanoma and Skin Cancer Centre.

Dr Sheldon Browning

Dr Sheldon Browning

MBBS, DipRANZCOG, FRACGP, DipDerm, MMED (Skin Cancer)

Dr Browning graduated from the University of Queensland in 1991 and has lived and worked in North Queensland for most of his career. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

He has practiced Skin Cancer Medicine in Mackay since 2004. During this time he completed the prestigious Cardiff Diploma of Dermatology (with a departmental recommendation) and has a Master’s Degree in Skin Cancer. He has certification in advanced dermoscopy and dermal imaging, as well as advanced skin cancer surgery.

Dr Browning has co-authored articles and published research in the field of skin cancer in national and international peer reviewed medical journals.

Dr Robert Cliffe

Dr Robert Cliffe

Dr Robert Cliffe joined SMART SCAN Skin Cancer Clinic in January 2019.

Dr Robert Cliffe had previously worked in a Skin Cancer Clinic with Dr Gordon Patrick on the Gold Coast for over 4 years. Dr Patrick had pioneered the use of the Molemax Scanners for Skin Cancer diagnosis and provided in –house training for Dr Cliffe.

Dr Robert Cliffe has undertaken Post Graduate training courses in Skin Cancer Diagnosis and Surgical techniques for tumour excision, including, skin-grafting and various rotation flaps to repair defects following removal of the skin cancer.

Dr Robert Cliffe is presently working toward the Professional Diploma in Skin Cancer Surgery and Dermoscopy

Dr Robert Cliffe has over 7000 hours flying experience and is a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) appointed by CASA to carry out medical examination for Pilots and Air Traffic Control officers

Dr Harshard Naik graduated from Nagpur University, India in 1998. He trained as a General Surgeon, leading to attaining his Membership of Royal College of Surgeons (England).

Before making the move to Hobart in 2009, Dr Naik lived and worked in the UK.

He has experience in various medical specialities and was fortunate to work in the Surgical field at some of Australia’s Tertiary hospitals. He has Been working as a General Practitioner and performing skin cancer checks and management since 2015.

In 2021, Dr Naik moved to Mackay and obtained his General Practitioner Fellowship. He is dedicated in his skin cancer work.

Dr Naik’s hobbies include fishing, watching tennis, cricket and travelling.

Dr Helen Cleveland

Dr Helen Cleveland

Dr Cleveland graduated in the UK in 2006, and has worked in a variety of hospital specialities since graduating. She has a wide clinical knowledge base especially in general medicine, surgery and paediatrics.

Doctor Cleveland has completed the following certificates:

  • 2013 / Primary Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine
  • 2018 / Advanced Certificate of Skin Cancer Medicine
  • 2020 / Certificate of Dermoscopy

Within general practice, Dr Cleveland has also developed a special interest in women’s health, gaining diplomas in obstetrics and gynaecology, and sexual and reproductive healthcare. She is also trained to insert contraceptive implants and Mirena coils.

Dr Cleveland is available Monday & Friday for appointments.

Surgery Hours

Our Mackay Skin Cancer Clinic answers telephone calls from 7:45am to 5:00pm, Monday to Thursday & Friday till midday.

Lloyds Northside answers calls Monday to Thursday from 7:45am – 4:30pm and Friday from 7:45am till Midday.

Five telephone lines are available, however, please be patient when calling during peak times —8:00am to 9:00am.

Urgent calls will be dealt with promptly.


A standard Mackay medical consultation is for 10 minutes. If you feel that you may need a longer consultation time with your doctor, please inform the receptionist when you book.

Please note specialised medical examinations or procedures may require a longer appointment.

Our team of Mackay Doctors and staff do their best to ensure all appointments run on time, however, medical emergencies may cause delays. If your doctor has been delayed, our staff will keep you informed at all times.
